NIHR - Knowledge mobilisation and research implementation

Experienced providers in embedding knowledge mobilisation and research design.

We have been supporting the social care sector for 30 years, and have a well developed understanding of how enable people to use research in their practice. Drawing from Nutley’s work (REF), in terms of knowledge mobilisation and research utilisation, we recognise that that simply broadcasting a message is not enough, which is why we offer a range of activities to support researchers to get their research outputs into practice.

Outputs aimed at people who have lived-experience of social care are also valuable, whether that is for unpaid carers, adults drawing on care and support or children, families and young people who are being supported by children’s services.

Research implementation activity

Our experience is that where we are written into research proposals dissemination and implementation activities are more effective.

This is because consideration of knowledge mobilisation is embedded into projects in terms of budget, messaging and timelines.

Activities to support implementation include:

Research design and participants

We can support researchers to consider the design of their research and how it aligns with current thinking in children’s and adult services across social care, health and the justice sector.

Research in Practice works with a network of Local Authorities, NHS Trusts and charities working across children & families and adult social care. We can mobilise our links with these networks to support researchers to access:

  • Facilitating workshops* for researchers to engage with professionals working in adult social care to test out emerging themes or recommendations from research.
  • Webinars.
  • Workshops.
  • Online learning resources including written resources, podcasts and videos.
  • Downloadable practice tools and briefings.

*Facilitation Workshops can be delivered online or in-person.

  • Organisations who might be sites.

  • Potential participants.

  • Prospective advisory or steering group members.
